Coquitlam rain and flood exposure
From October 18 to 20, 2024 an atmospheric river dropped a storm total of about 256 millimetres on Burke Mountain, an event city engineers called a once-in-200-year storm that pushed infrastructure past its limits. A Coquitlam mudslide killed a woman in her home and a man died in the swollen Coquitlam River. The city's steep terrain funnels runoff through the Como, Nelson, Hyde and Partington creeks, and a high tide during the storm left water nowhere to drain.
